Pysanky Workshop

The art of pysanka dates to ancient times when eggs were decorated in the spring as a symbol of the rebirth of the earth.  A pysanka (plural: pysanky) is a Ukrainian Easter egg, decorated using beeswax and dyes. The word comes from the verb pysanky, “to write”, as the designs are not painted on, but written with beeswax. Pysanka is often taken to mean any type of decorated egg, but it specifically refers to an egg created by the written-wax method and utilizing traditional folk motifs and designs.

We have an instructor, with 30 years of experience, to help participants create an egg of their own.  Tools, dye (very specific for this type of workshop), wax, eggs, etc. provided.  We will also have tools/kits available to purchase if desired.  Our instructor will also explain the history behind this egg decorating tradition.  The instructor states you do not have to be an artist to create a beautiful egg as it is mostly line drawing.
